Confederates Surrender
By: Michael Conflitti
Last week, April 9, 1865, Grant asked Lee to surrender through writing. In the writing, Grant sent to Lee, “The result of last week must convince you of the hopelessness of further resistance.” Lee ignored Grant's letter and still decided to fight on to the death. However, our Union soldiers trapped Lee and his army by capturing a train carrying food to the Confederate troops.
Grant and Lee met up in the town of the Appomattox Court House in Virginia. Not only the two generals talked together, they discussed ending war. Grant offered his terms. The Confederate army could keep their small firearms, the officers kept their horses, and no one would disturb the Confederate soldiers on the way back to their homes. Not only that Grant was kind enough to let the Confederates get home safe and keep their possessions, he gave 25,000 food rations to feed the troops. Now it is official, war is now over. We have beaten the Confederate army after four years of bloody war. Hopefully, the nation will be revived as it should be.
