Life at home
Young teenagers, forced out of their homes to go fight in the American civil war. Leaving their homes, friends, families, all behind. These young men, still young, forced to fight. They fight not only for their country, but also for themselves.
The families of the Civil War soldiers were very sad when their loved ones left. They had to go on with their daily normal lives and pretend that everything was normal, even though nothing was normal. They had to try to keep a positive attitude even though they were unsure if their family members would ever come home.
Half of the children population had their schools closed. Most of the schools closed were by a battlefield. It was unsafe for children to be at a school near a battlefield. You never know how far the battle could reach. When children were unable to go to school, they had to work. Some boys found low paying jobs. Girls helped their mothers around the house with chores and cooking. They would keep busy.
The schools closed were used as hospitals for the injured soldiers. It was a very deadly war. Hospitals were definitely needed. Churches were also turned into hospitals for sick or wounded soldiers. There were just so many, they needed as much space as they could get.
