Sherman Marches for a Point
By: Michael Conflitti
The Union has officially broke the will of the South. William Tecumseh Sherman marched to the sea to prove that the Confederates cannot protect their people from invaders like the Union. Sherman had 60,000 men in Atlanta after capturing Atlanta on September 2, 1864. He split up his 60,000 men into two even wings.
Sherman and his troops destroyed Atlanta. On November 15, 1864, Sherman and his men, burned down the cities and the farmlands limiting the amount of food to give to the soldiers and the people in the South. Then Sherman and his troops destroyed the Carolinas on the way to meet Ulysses S. Grant near Richmond. The destruction that the Union troops did were taking the Southerner's food, tore up the railroad lines to kill transportation; they destroyed fields for farming and killed livestock. This squeezed the life out of the Southerners. Not only was land destroyed slaves from their land left the plantations to follow Sherman's army. Now that Sherman has met up with Grant, we can finally take over Richmond, Virginia to end the Confederate States of America.
